The Hans Fallada Museum in Carwitz

We are delighted that you have found your way to the websites of the Hans Fallada Society and the Hans Fallada Museum in Carwitz! To show you that a visit to our museum is well worth the journey, we would like to give you a brief introduction. The present-day Hans Fallada Museum is located in Hans Fallada’s former home, where he lived and worked between 1933 and 1944. Since 1995, the Hans Fallada Society has run a vibrant museum in the house and across the entire estate. The museum has been certified by the Federal Government as a “Cultural Memorial Site of National Significance”.

Look over Hans Fallada’s shoulder as he works on his novels in his study, which has been restored with its original furnishings! On the veranda, in the dining room – both with their original fittings – and in the kitchen, you can also experience first-hand how the writer lived. In the themed room “Hans Fallada. Life and Work”, housed in the former bedroom, discover how multifaceted and extensive Fallada’s oeuvre is and how complex and ambivalent his biography was! In the former bedroom of his daughter Lore, you can also get to know Fallada as a children’s author. In the film room, situated in the former guest room on the upper floor, you can watch impressive documentaries and an animated film based on Fallada’s stories, as well as see his death mask.

Explore Fallada’s 15,000-square-metre estate on Lake Carwitz. It includes the beautifully designed triangular flower bed planted true to its original form, Fallada’s original bee house restored in accordance with conservation standards, his faithfully reconstructed boathouse, his orchard meadow and the “seating area by the lakeshore”. In this way, you can also get to know Fallada as an accomplished farmer – or simply relax in the spacious and beautifully maintained grounds.

Experience one of our well-researched special exhibitions in the former barn on the Fallada estate, which, like the house, was built around 1848! Or attend one of our events in the barn hall or in our beautifully situated barn theatre – an amphitheatre! Visit our annual Hans Fallada Days, held on the weekend before or after his birthday on 21 July, or “Fridays with Fallada”, our summer series offering readings, concerts, theatre performances and film screenings every second Friday at 8 p.m.

Whether you come alone or in a group, we offer many ways to engage with Fallada: guided group tours, lectures, readings, literary walks, a 124-page museum guide, an audio guide for children and adults, and a children’s puzzle booklet. All of these are available in our museum shop, where you can also purchase all available Fallada titles, audiobooks, radio plays, film adaptations, secondary literature, postcards, souvenirs and hiking maps.

Fallada researchers will also find what they need on the estate: the Hans Fallada Archive, operated by the Neubrandenburg Literature Centre, is located on the upper floor of the barn and can be used by prior appointment.
